Anyone have a good mailing list provider. I'm looking for something free to start, maybe I would be willing to pay for options and features later.

Try www.yourmailinglistprovider.com I've used them in the past. They have a free accoun that can handle 1000 people and the email can be text of html. It does require a double opt in by the client though.

Yo can upgrade to their paid service which allows you more people and doesn't require the opt in.
