Try www.godaddy.com I use them almost exclusively. Domains are cheap and renewals are cheap. You don't have to host with.

There are some special offers out there to register domains but they always get you on the renewal.

Register.com recently had a special to get a free domain (it's over now I think) but the renewal was like $25 a year or something.
